Here is the research that my design tech group found yesterday:
Market Research:
There are many different types of lamps on the market, from many different stores. I focused mainly on lighting direct. The three different types of light to be in a lamp are L.E.D, neon, and incandescent.
Incandescent is what has been widely used for a long time and is not very efficient, with less than 5% of energy being visible light.
Neon lights are glass tubes containing gas and are more suited for signs or looking cool.
L.E.D lights are becoming more popular now. They produce almost no heat, can be made waterproof easily, and are very energy efficient lamps are being applied to all different types of uses. Ceiling lights, bedside lamps, reading lamps, camping lights, to name a few. They can be made out of different types of materials too, such wood, plastic, and cloth. Even recycled items or objects like shelled out cameras work!
Design Research:
There are four main styles of lamps; antique, Bauhaus minimalist and modern.
We thought that the modern style of lamps is the best, and it will be what we base the design of our lamp on.
Environmental Research:
LED lights are more energy efficient than incandescent and neon lights, meaning that they are better for the environment.
Lamps made from recycled materials are a lot more environmentally friendly than those made from new materials, which have a significant environmental impact.
It is usually better to buy lamps made locally, because in New Zealand there is a strict code of ethics around labour and the environment, whereas in places such as China, labour is sometimes exploited, and materials used that are not sustainable.
